Children today are more adventurous and daring than ever. Many of them try their hand on adrenaline-inducing extreme sports, such as skateboarding and skiing. Both are extremely popular with these kids, to satisfy their hunger for that adrenaline rush.
While skateboarding is more popular than skiing, more and more people, and also children, are being hooked to skiing. According to them, it’s better to feel the mountain wind drifting to your face as you descend the mountain on fast speeds. While skiing is more dangerous than skateboarding, it is becoming more and more popular than before.
Children are very welcome to try out skiing, but are only limited to safe areas and on-piste and groomed snow conditions. This is to prevent them from getting badly hurt, as they cannot handle different snow conditions and climates. Once they prove themselves to be good and capable of skiing alone, they may try skiing on other ungroomed snow conditions, and they may also try out on cross country competitions.
Children, obviously, have a different set of equipments. They can’t use the Men and Women-specific skis, but there are Children-specific skis designed especially for them. Most hobby stores sell children-specific ski equipment, including junior skis, children-specific boots and junior ski gear and clothing.
Before buying junior skis, make sure that they meet the skis’ requirement. Make sure you have the right measurement of your child’s foot. This is very vital in choosing the right board for your child to prevent mishaps. To be absolutely sure, let the store representative measure your child’s foot and make the suggestion on which measurement and ski you should take. Also, do note that there are different types of skis: freeride skis, downhill / alpine skis, race skis and many others. Choose the one that complements your style.
Next is to consider the ski board’s materials. This greatly influences the attributes of the board, as lighter boards mean faster acceleration and speed, while heavy and large boards are more on power transfer and control. Brand names are also important when choosing a ski board. For example, Nordic skis are made from grinded wood and durability enhancing materials for added control and improved speed, Rossignol snow boards are made from full-wood core that grants added durability, and Salomon has a full-wood core like Rossignol but with more durability and control. Be sure to choose the one that mostly favors your style.
After choosing the right ski board, you will need to buy the ski equipment for your child. This includes the boots and ski clothing. Ski clothing is sold on hobby shops or online. Ski boots can also be bought on hobby shops or online, but it is better to purchase them on shops, as you will be able to try it on.
You can also try buying ski packages to save you the time of buying each part and equipment separately. Equipments on these packages complement each other, so you don’t need to waste time searching for each part on shops.
However confident you are on your children’s skills, be sure to guide them and teach them the basics of skiing first. Let them practice alone to develop their confidence, and they will be able to learn and improve themselves as they go along.
